Is Fuel Economy Chevrolet Silverado’s Newest Edge?
At the beginning of the year, Chevrolet unveiled its newest pickup truck, the 2019 Silverado 1500, which will be available in the fall of 2018. The car manufacturer hinted that the new model will have six engine-transmission combinations, but it only revealed three.
Last June, however, Chevrolet was ready to release new figures regarding the pickup truck’s fuel economy, and it gained a lot of hype and curiosity from car enthusiasts. But is fuel economy really the Silverado’s newest edge? Let’s see the numbers:
The 2019 Silverado 6.2L V8 L87 Engine
The Silverado with the 6.2L V8 L87 engine and Dynamic Fuel Management combination offers a 10-speed auto MQB and two-wheel drive. Its speed is rated at 16 MPG in the city, 20 MPG on the highway and has a combined MPG of 17. When compared to its K2 platform Silverado predecessor, the new Silverado is more efficient in the city but less efficient on the highway.
The 2019 Silverado 5.3L V8 L84 Engine
Another combination for the new Silverado is its 5.3L V8 L84 engine and Dynamic Fuel Management mated with an eight-speed auto MQE and two-wheel drive. It has a combined MPG of 19 and is rated at 17MPG in the city and 23MPG on the highway. Although you can gain an extra mile per gallon in the city, the number stays the same on the highway. This means that the new Silverado delivers the same power as the outgoing 2017 Silverado 1500.
What Can the Four-Cylinder Engine Offer?
The new 2019 Silverado boasts of a 2.7-liter turbocharged inline-four engine. This makes the new model the only full-sized truck with a four-cylinder engine available in the market today. But what can it really offer to improve performance and increase fuel efficiency?
- The LT and RST trim level engine is paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and features a cylinder deactivation feature where two cylinders can shut off under light loads to save on fuel.
- The four-cylinder engine delivers 348 pound-feet of torque and 310 horsepower and can run from 0 to 60 mph in less than seven seconds.
- It gained a rating of 20MPG in the city, 23MPG on the highway with a combined MPG of 20 from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
- Chevrolet promises that the new Silverado’s payload capacity will almost be comparable to those offered in the F-15o and Ram 1500.
One of the new engine options for the Silverado is the 3.0-liter Duramax turbodiesel V6, which will reportedly be combined with a 10-speed automatic transmission. Chevrolet has declined to reveal the torque and horsepower of this engine, so we’ll have to wait and see how it performs when it is released on the market in early 2019.
The numbers released by Chevrolet for the 2019 Silverado has garnered mixed opinions from the experts. Some say that the new model will not offer any difference from its predecessor while others beg to disagree. The numbers are preliminary, after all, and they could still change as the Silverado’s release date gets near.
